Module 4

We, the people.

Key Points:

  • Accessibility is important, as you want everyone to be able to have equal access to your brand, products and services.
  • When we talk about accessibility, we mean the ability to make it easy to read, connect and transact for all abilities.
  • Google pays attention to accessibility, so you need to make sure your website is optimised against the Web 2.1 guidelines.
  • Tasmanian literacy is only 49% - so half the population is functionally illiterate, that is a lot of customers.
  • Use short sentences and clear appropriate images in your social posts, emails, and on your website.
  • Pay attention to who you are including, and make sure people aren’t accidentally excluded by your language or images.
  • Are you using diverse images? Does your language acknowledge a spectrum of gender identification, are you LGBTQIA+ friendly? Are you including an acknowledgment of country/first people place names in your materials? Is it friendly for second language speakers?

* Digital accessibility standard from WCAG have recently been updated as of 2024 from 2.1 to 2.2 - for more information on how to meet these standards and what they involve head to the WCAG website.
